At Withymoor Primary School, we are passionate about helping children become confident, enthusiastic readers and writers. Our English curriculum is designed to develop strong communication, reading and writing skills through engaging, high-quality learning experiences.
We recognise the importance of building secure foundations in literacy from an early age. In Nursery and Reception, children develop speaking, listening and early reading skills through stories, songs, rhymes and language-rich activities. We teach phonics using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme, which provides children with the skills needed to read and write confidently and fluently.
As children progress through school, we continue to develop spelling through the No Nonsense Spelling programme and handwriting through Kinetic Letters. These approaches support children in developing strong transcriptional skills, including spelling, handwriting and sentence construction, enabling them to become fluent and independent writers.
Writing is taught through The Write Stuff approach, where children are inspired by high-quality texts and exciting learning opportunities. Lessons focus on developing vocabulary, grammar, creativity and confidence, while supporting children to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
At Withymoor, we aim to foster a lifelong love of reading and writing by creating a supportive and engaging environment where all children are encouraged to achieve their full potential.
