Personal Development

At Withymoor Primary School, we want every child to leave us with the confidence, knowledge and character they need to succeed in the next stage of their education and in later life.

We believe personal development is about far more than academic achievement. We want our pupils to feel safe, value themselves and others, make positive choices and develop the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Through a carefully planned programme of learning, enrichment and pastoral support, pupils are encouraged to become respectful citizens who understand their responsibilities, celebrate diversity and contribute positively to their community.

Our personal development offer is built around five key strands:

  • Health and Safety
  • Character and Wellbeing
  • Citizenship, Equality, British Values and SMSC
  • Aspirations, Future Pathways and Transition
  • Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Together, these strands help pupils to become safe, healthy, respectful, resilient and aspirational young people who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Our work is underpinned by our core school values: We are Resilient, Safe, Respectful and Ready to Learn. We encourage all children to demonstrate these values in their daily actions and interactions, guided by our simple but powerful principle: "We treat others as we want to be treated." These values help pupils develop positive relationships, make thoughtful choices and build the confidence to face challenges with determination.

Personal development is woven through every aspect of life at Withymoor and is not limited to a single lesson or subject.

Pupils learn about health, wellbeing, relationships and keeping safe through our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, assemblies, awareness events and targeted pastoral support. Safeguarding is central to all that we do, and pupils are taught how to recognise risks, seek help and keep themselves safe both online and offline.

Our character and well being provision helps pupils build resilience, confidence and independence. Through our academy values, leadership opportunities, behaviour curriculum, sporting activities and residential experiences, pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, take responsibility and develop positive attitudes towards learning and life.

Our Character Development Plan supports the aims of the National Curriculum by promoting pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, as well as the teaching of British Values. It helps children develop essential life skills such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, empathy, responsibility and respect for others. Through these experiences, pupils learn how to contribute positively to their school, local community and the wider world.

At Withymoor Primary School, we are committed to developing successful learners and well-rounded individuals. Through enrichment opportunities and wider experiences, pupils develop confidence, discover new interests and build cultural capital. They leave Withymoor with memories, experiences and skills that extend beyond the classroom.
