Handwriting

At Withymoor Primary School, we use the Kinetic Letters programme to develop fluent, confident and automatic handwriting skills. We believe that handwriting is an essential life skill and an important part of the writing process. By developing secure handwriting and fine motor skills, children are able to focus more confidently on the content, creativity and accuracy of their writing.

Kinetic Letters is a whole-school approach that teaches handwriting through movement, strength and muscle memory. The programme helps children develop the physical foundations needed for writing, including posture, pencil grip, letter formation and control.

Intent

At Withymoor, our intent is for all pupils to:

  • Develop fluent, legible and automatic handwriting.

  • Build strong fine and gross motor skills to support writing.

  • Form letters correctly and consistently.

  • Develop confidence, stamina and pride in presentation.

  • Understand the importance of handwriting as part of effective communication.

  • Use joined handwriting fluently as they progress through school.

We recognise the importance of secure transcriptional skills and understand that automatic handwriting supports children in becoming more successful and independent writers.

Implementation

Kinetic Letters is taught through regular, structured sessions that focus on both the physical and cognitive aspects of handwriting. Lessons include movement breaks and exercises designed to strengthen core muscles, improve posture and support pencil control.

Children are taught:

  • Correct seating position and posture.

  • Secure pencil grip.

  • Accurate letter formation.

  • Letter orientation and sizing.

  • Consistent joins and handwriting fluency.

  • How to develop control, speed and stamina over time.

The programme uses simple language, memorable routines and multisensory approaches to support all learners. Handwriting expectations are consistently reinforced across the curriculum to ensure pupils apply their skills in all written work.

Impact

The impact of Kinetic Letters can be seen in the increasing confidence, fluency and presentation of pupils’ writing. Children develop automatic handwriting skills that allow them to focus more effectively on composition, vocabulary and creativity.

As a result, pupils at Withymoor:

  • Write with greater fluency and control.

  • Form letters accurately and consistently.

  • Develop increased stamina for writing tasks.

  • Take pride in the presentation of their work.

  • Demonstrate improved confidence and independence as writers.

  • Are equipped with the transcriptional skills needed for future learning.

Through Kinetic Letters, we aim to develop pupils who view handwriting as a positive and purposeful part of communication and who are confident in presenting their ideas clearly and effectively.
